Gems are precious or semi-precious stones typically found by Mining rocks, Thieving the Gems Stall, or dropped by monsters that can access the rare drop table.
Gems can be cut using a chisel upon reaching certain Crafting levels. There is a chance that semi-precious gems can be cut unsuccessfully, producing a useless crushed gemstone for 75% less experience. Although, it is believed that this chance decreases as the player's Crafting level increases.[1] Cutting gems, especially precious gems, can be a quick way of gaining Crafting experience, once the player obtains the uncut gems.
Precious gems are typically used with a gold bar to Craft jewellery, especially amulets, which can be enchanted with special abilities. Semi-precious gems, however, have limited use in RuneScape Classic. All three types are used in Legend's Quest, and that's it.

Oyster pearls
Oyster pearls are an unusual type of semi-precious gem, both in how they're obtained and what they're used for. Oysters come from Fishing with a big net and have an approximately 10% chance of containing pearls. Using a chisel on it produces oyster pearl bolt tips, which are used for making crossbow ammunition. Carving the tips also gives experience in Fletching rather than Crafting.
Shilo Village gem rocks
- Main article: Shilo Village mine
All uncut gems except dragonstone can be mined directly from gem rocks in northwest Shilo Village. Level 40 Mining and the Shilo Village quest are required.
Gem shops
The following shops buy and sell precious gems:
- Al Kharid gem stall in northwest Al Kharid
- Gems Stall in East Ardougne marketplace
- Herquin's Gems in southwest Falador
Trivia
- In RuneScape 2, all gem types can be carved into bolt tips and even enchanted for unique benefits.
