Normal trees are found growing all over Gielinor. They come in a few varieties (round on top, cone/pointy, and unhealthy-looking), although they're all just named "Tree" and mostly function the same. The exception to this are "evil trees" which look like unhealthy trees, but have "Approach" and "Search" options instead of "Chop". Both options can harm the player, but not kill.

Normal trees can be chopped down with any axe (not a battle axe) at any Woodcutting level, yielding 25 experience and a log when successful. Only 1 log can be acquired from an ordinary tree before it disappears and waits to respawn. Most chop-able trees can be chopped by left-clicking, however, unhealthy trees require right-clicking. This makes unhealthy-looking trees undesirable for training Woodcutting.

Uses[]

The only logs that can be used to train Firemaking are the normal logs dropped by this tree. In turn, burning the logs give increased experience based on the player's Firemaking level. Normal logs are also the only type of logs that can be cut into arrow shafts for the Fletching skill. It is for these reasons that a player may chop normal trees long after they have the Woodcutting level for better types.

Normal logs can also be made into normal shortbows and longbows, just like oak, willow, maple, yew, and magic logs.

Locations[]

There are an estimated 1726 leafy, 1325 pointy, and 3139 unhealthy trees throughout RuneScape Classic, not counting "evil trees". Unhealthy trees are generally around "spooky" or "dangerous" areas like Draynor Village & Manor, West Ardougne, and the Wilderness.

History[]

Woodcut before change

Originally, Woodcutting had to be done by using the axe on the tree.

Prior to the release of Fletching on 25 March 2002, normal trees were the only type of chop-able tree in RuneScape Classic. Like Firemaking, Woodcutting experience was based on a formula relative to the player's Woodcutting level: (30 XP at level 1; 201.5 XP at level 99). The Fletching skill included 5 new trees to chop, so the experience was changed to a fixed amount. It was 12.5 XP briefly and later changed to 25 XP.

As Fletching is a members-only skill, all of the higher-level trees were placed in members-only areas. Many free players were upset with the experience change and lack of new options because it required a much longer period of time to reach high levels. In RuneScape 2, trees are spread out over Gielinor and free players are permitted to chop up to yew trees.

An additional change that came with Fletching's release was one-click chopping. Before this, the player needed to "Use" their axe on the tree to chop it. "Chop" was added as the default, left-click option for most trees, and available as an option in the right-click menu.
