A shop is a place, usually a building, in RuneScape Classic, where a player can buy items from (or sell them to) an NPC (sometimes behind a counter). Most settlements contain shops for various different items, such as weapons, armour, runes, and gems. General stores are a specific type of shop which allow the sale of any tradeable type of item. Other shops have a fixed list of items which are always visible, and those are the only items which can be sold to the shop.
Shops cannot contain more than 65,535 (216 - 1) of a single type of item because of Jagex's use of unsigned 16-bit integers.
